Healthcare workers often feel pressured to be in two places at once: (1) in the hospital caring for patients, (2) in a classroom, learning the latest standards in care. It’s a challenge that will only escalate as budget constraints force hospitals to do more with less.

To help solve this challenge, healthcare organizations are looking to other industries (e.g. higher education and corporations) for innovative training ideas and solutions. And what they’re finding is compelling. Here are a few of the strategies that have shown promise:

  1. Offer flexible learning options. Consider the content you’re trying to convey, and the setting for which it would be best consumed. Develop a mix of online, in-person, and in-the-moment training based on the subject. Whereas compliance training makes sense to deliver online, demonstrating new techniques may be better in person.
  2. Personalize programs to the learner. Competency-based education, an approach used in higher education which allows learners to progress at their own pace, is gaining traction in healthcare as well. Workers that need more time to digest the material may do so, whereas those who have mastered it may move on to other tasks more quickly (such as delivering patient care).
  3. Create engaging experiences. Incorporate a variety of modalities (visual, tactical, audible) to address individual learning styles. Not only does this approach make for a much more interesting employee experience, but it’s more likely to reinforce learning comprehension and retention.

Hospitals that have applied these best practices are reporting not only improved employee satisfaction, but improved patient outcomes as well.

Given that the stakes are high—with patient outcomes and employee burnout at stake—many hospitals are accelerating their plans to adopt a more dynamic and scalable healthcare training framework.
