Recently, in conjunction with American Association of School Administrators
and National School Public Relations Association
, we had the pleasure of presenting the 2011 Leadership Through Communication Award
at this year’s NSPRA conference in San Antonio
. The Leadership Through Communication Award is given to K-12 leaders who are responsible for enhancing school-to-parent communication within their district. This year’s award
went to Steven T. Webb, superintendent, and Thomas R. Hagley, Jr., executive director of community and government relations, of Vancouver Public Schools
, located in Washington State.
Vancouver showed exemplary leadership in enriching district communication by:
- Empowering employees through communication training programs;
- Requiring principals to own parent and community engagement strategies for their schools;
- Establishing Family Resource Centers in “opportunity zone” schools; and
- Developing two-way communication and facilitating avenues for honest parent and community feedback.
Applications for next year’s Leadership Through Communication Award
are currently being accepted. In the past, a handful of Blackboard Connect
clients have been the recipients of the honor, including Deer Valley Unified School District
, Miami-Dade County Public Schools
and Twin Rivers Unified School District
. The winner of the 2012 Leadership Through Communication Award will be recognized at next year’s AASA national conference in Houston and at the NSPRA annual seminar in Chicago, with $10,000 to be contributed by Blackboard Connect.
