The Social Studies team at Florida Virtual School takes advantage of its virtual classroom by the creation of live and interactive lessons for students – regardless of the students’ learning style, ability level or geographic location. As a result, the Social Studies team has launched live lessons for its U.S. History course that foster authentic and captivating opportunities for more than 9,000 students in 2013 and through the second quarter of 2014, combined.
With the data from student diagnostic tests and teacher “get to know you” welcome calls, teachers are able to design personalized instruction tailored to the students’ various learning modalities. Through Blackboard technology, students are offered calendar invites to virtually attend breakout sessions where multiple lessons are conducted simultaneously with the ability to track students’ progress through the live lessons.
After comparing End-of-Course state exams, it is conclusive that the Social Studies team’s interactive virtual lessons are a success in the classroom – with more full and part-time students in the program scoring within the top third of the scoring range compared to the state percentage. The diligence of the FLVS Social Studies team has greatly impacted student outcomes with lessons contoured to the students’ various learning styles, thus awarding them as one of the Blackboard Catalyst Award winners for Student Impact.
