Almost any recent article or blog post about textbooks echoes the refrain from students and faculty that textbooks are expensive. So, the growing trend by publishers is to offer digital versions of textbooks (eTextbooks) as lower priced options. However, many of these publishers only offer this content in exclusive platforms preventing broad adoption.

There are significant savings associated with eTextbooks: students can save up to 50% versus the cost of a textbook, they lighten the load by eliminating the need to carry books, handouts and notes from class to class, and not to mention, are better for the environment. Barnes & Noble’s NOOKstudy is a new, free eTextbook reader application that offers one platform (and one login) to a user’s complete digital reading library.

Using NOOKstudy, educators and learners can:

  • Have all their books open in one single view, easily accessible by tabs
  • Take notes directly in e-textbooks and add links to related Web content
  • Find and look up definitions and formulas online quickly and easily
  • Access their leisure reading from this single application

Through a partnership between Blackboard and Barnes & Noble, higher education institutions in North America can now help their educators and students do more in Blackboard Learn with eTextbooks. With the Barnes & Noble NOOKstudy Blackboard Building Block, professors can set up links directly to the eTextbook material within the Blackboard course environment making it fast and easy for their students to start studying.
