Since I last reported a year ago on our ongoing support of the developer community, a lot has been happening at Blackboard in support of integrations and customizations. Today, we are announcing exciting news – an update on our support of the IMS Global Learning Consortium Learning Tools Interoperability® (LTI®) standards as well as an update on where we are with REST APIs.

New support for IMS LTI Standards

Our big news is that support for IMS LTI 2.0 is now available for Blackboard Learn SaaS in Technical Preview. Partners and clients can use the LTI 2.0 specification to create solution integrations that are accessible from various access points in both the Original and Ultra experiences. Specifically, the required LTI 2.0 services are supported along with a number of optional variables. Other LTI 2.0 extensions and specifications including Content Item messages and Gradebook services are planned.

Our latest investment in Blackboard Learn, the Learn 9.1 Q2 2017 release, also includes an update for IMS LTI Outcomes 1.0. For those updating to the latest release, LTI course links created by partners and institutionally created solutions through Building Block APIs can now leverage LTI Outcomes 1.0 for grade/score return. This enhancement gives developers more tools to begin a transition from Building Blocks to LTI and REST web services in a gradual way, or to be able to leverage existing LTI support in their tools while also taking advantage of the power of Building Block APIs.

REST API Progress

We’ve also been actively working on filling out the availability of REST APIs so our developers and partners can create integrations and extensions that are easier to create and manage. The Learn 9.1 Q2 2017 release brings the latest REST API work available in SaaS to our self-hosted and managed-hosted customers. This latest release provides new RESTful services for SIS integrations that enable administrators to check on job status and retrieve error records, allowing for the setup of monitoring and record correction processes.

With this latest addition, REST APIs are now available for Courses & Orgs, Users, Memberships, Grades, Terms, Content, Attempts, Data Source Keys, Announcements, Groups, Course Links and SIS Logs. New REST APIs first show up in Learn SaaS on an ongoing basis, and we add them to Learn 9.1 with each of our bi-annual releases. You can stay up-to-date and access full documentation on our REST APIs on our API Dev Portal.

In Summary

Blackboard Learn is one of the first major Learning Management Systems to support LTI 2.0. Coupled with our ongoing development of REST APIs, it’s part of our ongoing commitment to provide the latest updates to our developer community. We’re happy to say you’re responding. We have over 1,200 developers registered to develop applications using our REST APIs. Stay tuned for more.
